Character history:
Even when River was very young, it was obvious that she was beyond gifted. When she was three, she was correcting her older brother’s spelling and finding errors in his textbooks. Her parents, being wealthy, were able to give her every opportunity to develop both her body and her mind. They believed that the best one of these opportunities was The Academy, the most advanced and challenging educational institution in the Alliance.
However River quickly discovered that her school was in fact a lab trying to create the perfect assassin. River was experimented on, which resulted in her developing psychic abilities as well as becoming virtually unstoppable at hand-to-hand combat, unless a safe word was used to restrain her. Her ability to control emotion was completely removed as well, which left her quite unstable. Desperate to get out, River began sending coded messages to Simon, in hope that he would be able to rescue her.
Simon eventually was able to rescue her and the pair eventually found themselves onboard a ship known as Serenity. When River was discovered in stasis in the cargo hold, Simon was forced to reveal what had happened. Reluctantly, Captain Malcolm Reynolds agreed to keep them on as passengers, in return for Simon acting as the ship’s doctor, as well as keeping his sister in line (something he had limited success with).
The Academy however was not about to let their star pupil get away so easily. They continually chased the siblings throughout the solar system, getting very close many times (especially after being tipped off by one of Serenity’s crew, Jayne Cobb). At the same time, Simon was able to discover some of what had been done to her at the Academy, including the fact that her brain has been cut into.
River holds many secrets inside her head, secrets she should not know – and much of which she doesn’t even realize she knows. She and her brother are still on the run for the Academy and still trying to figure out what happened when she wakes up in a Glaxcin cell.
Character personality:
To say River is volatile would be an understatement. She was originally a very sweet, caring, and, of course, intelligent girl, but much of this has been lost beneath the unpredictable nature which she now has. When in good spirits, she can seem like a normal girl, but there is always a great potential for her to take unexpected and dangerous actions (such as going after Jayne with a knife in an apparently random attack). She has an aptitude for the assimilation of knowledge and date, including empathy and the ability to read situations, something which was enhanced to give her psychic abilities.
She is often cryptic and can be near impossible to comprehend. She also is at least slightly out of touch with the reality around her, sometimes seeing things which are not there or interpreting the world in an unusual way.
She also loves to dance.
Physical description: River is physically very small (being once described as a 90lb girl), though much stronger than she first appears. She has long, brown hair and brown eyes. She prefers wearing loose-fitting dresses and very often goes barefoot.
Magical powers or special skills: Psychic abilities, able to memorize targets and accurate hit them with a firearm (despite having her eyes closed when shooting), extremely skilled in a Kung-fu/Kickboxing hybrid style of fighting, falls into a state of unconsciousness when the safe word “Eta kuram na smekh”
Any crimes committed in canon: murder, smuggling, assault, breaking and entering, theft of controlled substances, espionage, evasion of the authorities
